## Module 2- Qualities of a Successful Proposal-Assignment Description Jethro Jones ## Assignment Directions ## Assignment **Qualities of a Successful Proposal** When you solicit funds from granting agencies, you employ a specific type of technical writing that requires a clear articulation of your 1) understanding of the interests of the funding agency, 2) ability to clearly state goals, objectives, and a plan for addressing the funder’s interests, 3) ability to convince the funder that you and your organization have the capacity to accomplish the strategic plan, and 4) have a way to assess the impact of your proposed activities. The details vary by agency or foundation, but the structure is consistent. For example, some agencies may require that partnerships between stakeholders be a part of proposals; others may require a research plan to be a key objective.  As a grant writer or team of grant writers, it is important to read the funder’s request for proposals (RFP) carefully and notice where your interests align. The better the alignment, the higher score you are likely to receive in a merit review process. **The Assignment** 1. Once you have submitted the confidentiality statement, read the funder's [Request for Proposals](https://umsystem.instructure.com/courses/243620/files/26980351?wrap=1 "Translational Fellows- RFP_0630_ FINAL[2].pdf") [Download Request for Proposals](https://umsystem.instructure.com/courses/243620/files/26980351/download?download_frd=1) and the [Proposal](https://umsystem.instructure.com/courses/243620/files/26980352?wrap=1 "Share June 2023 UMSL Translational Fellow Grant Proposal.pdf") [Download Proposal](https://umsystem.instructure.com/courses/243620/files/26980352/download?download_frd=1) that was submitted and funded.  2. In your group, discuss the proposal as if you are a member of the review panel, with the responsibility to assist the funder’s decision about the merit of the proposal. 3. Then, write a summary of your analysis, including both your thoughts about the proposal and any thoughts that may have emerged for you from the discussion of your group review panel. 4. Submit your summary in Canvas. *You may use the following questions to guide your analysis.* 1. How did the objectives and activities in the proposal align with the goals stated in the RFP? 2. Which of the goals in the RFP did the proposal address the best? 3. What evidence is present that might convince a funder that the proposed activities would have an adequate impact on the target population? 4. What evidence is present that would indicate that the organization proposing the project has the capacity to carry out the intended strategic plan? 5. Will the proposed project, if implemented successfully, advance the profession in which it is situated? [[EDUC 7325 - Grant Writing]]
